Spicy dhal recipe

Ingredients /nutrition

  • 250 g red lentils
  • 2 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 3 finely chopped garlic cloves
  • 1 chopped Thai chili
  • 1 stalk chopped celery
  • 3 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 5 cups water
  • 2 tsp tamarind paste
  • 4 chopped shallots
  • 1 chopped carrot
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/4 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

Methods / instructions

  1. In a heavy saucepan, combine the first 11 ingredients from the ingredient lsit and bring to boil.
  2. Reduce heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes.
  3. Transfer mixture into a food processor or blender and process until smooth.
  4. Return mixture to heat, add in remaining ingredients and cook for 6 minutes.
  5. Serve immediately with pappadams.
