Spicy fried fish recipe - Nga-gyaw

Ingredients (nutrition)

  • 1½ lb white filleted fish chunks (haddock or cod)
  • 1¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¾ tbsp soy sauce
  • 1½ tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 5 tbsp hot water
  • 6½ tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 peeled and sliced onions
  • 1½ tsp chili powder

Preparation (instructions)

  1. Rub fish with turmeric and soy sauce. Set aside.
  2. Place tamarind pulp in a small bowl of hot water and compress to extract the flavor. Strain and reserve tamarind liquid.
  3. Heat oil in a non stick pan and saute onions.
  4. Remove onions and drain on kitchen paper towel. Set aside.
  5. Pour away half the amount of the oil in pan and add in chili powder.
  6. Increase heat and stir in fish for 1 minute.
  7. Add in tamarind liquid, cover and simmer gently for 18 minutes.
  8. Garnish with reserved fried onions and serve hot.
