Radish & fish soup recipe - Mon-la-u Hin-gyo

Ingredients (nutrition)

  • 8½ oz white filleted fish chunks (haddock or cod)
  • 1¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ tsp turmeric powder
  • 2½ tsp cooking oil
  • 2 peeled and crushed garlic cloves
  • 1 peeled and pounded onion
  • ½ in peeled and pounded ginger
  • ¼ tsp chili powder
  • 5 chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • ¼ tsp shrimp paste
  • 2 pt cold water
  • 6 springs coriander leaves
  • 2 tbsp dried tamarind pulp
  • 5 tbsp hot water
  • 12 oz peeled and thinly sliced white radish

Preparation (instructions)

  1. Rub fish with salt and turmeric. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a saucepan and saute garlic, onion, ginger and chili powder.
  3. Mix well for 3 minutes and stir in tomatoes, soy sauce, shrimp paste, cold water and coriander leaves.
  4. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer gently for 12 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, place tamarind pulp in a small bowl of hot water and compress to extract the flavor.
  6. Strain tamarind liquid into the saucepan and add in radish.
  7. Simmer for another 12-15 minutes.
  8. Serve hot.
